Static and Kinetic Coefficients of Friction of Plastic Film and Sheeting (ASTM D1894)

This test standard specifies the test conditions for determining the coefficients of friction of plastic film and sheeting when sliding over itself or other substances. The specimen shape is square or rectangular film (depending on where it is attached).  We use a moving sled of a known weight pulled against a stationary plane.  The load cell in the test frame's moving crosshead measures the load from the moving sled during the test.  Test results calculated are the static and kinetic coefficient of friction.  This test can be run on single or dual column test systems.
 
The kinetic coefficient of friction involves the average load during the uniform sliding portion of the test so data interpretation and data acquisition are critical.  Software analysis would arguably be more accurate versus a manual interpretation of the average load reading.  When using software, data acquisition devices should offer a high sample rate with uniform sampling throughout the test.  Additionally, bandwidth is critical.  Too high of a bandwidth would allow noise that could lead to extraneous data. Too low of a bandwidth can "dull" the test data readings and lead to missed peaks and troughs, resulting in lower average load values.
