Tensile Properties of Yarns by Single Strand Method (ASTM D2256)
|
ASTM D2256 specifies the test conditions for determining the tensile properties of yarns using the single-strand method. Testing yarn is an essential part between the raw material and manufacturing the fabric. The process determines the quality of the raw material and aides in controlling the quality of the end product.
To determine tensile strength and elongation at break, specimens are clamped in the appropriate grips and extended at constant rate until failure occurs. The test results can be used to determine the breaking tenacity, modulus, and breaking toughness of the material. For this test, we suggest using a single or dual column tabletop universal testing machine that is configured with capstan or pneumatic cord and yarn grips, which are highly effective at reducing clamping stress applied to the specimen and providing essential specimen alignment. Using materials testing software, such as Bluehill® 2, allows for test control, data acquisition, and preparation of test reports. We suggest reviewing the standard to fully understand the test set up, procedures, and result requirements.
